On Wednesday night, New York State Senator Jose Peralta passed away due to a “medical emergency” at Elmhurst Hospital Center in New York. He reportedly gave up the ghost surrounded by his family.
Until his death, Sen. Peralta represented the 13th State Senate District, a diverse district covering Jackson Heights, Corona, Elmhurst, East Elmhurst, and parts of Woodside and Astoria. He was 47.
In March 2010, Jose Peralta became the first Dominican-American elected to the New York State Senate after winning a special election. He was reelected that same year in a general election. Senator Peralta won all his reelection attempts in 2012, 2014 and 2016 general elections. In 2018, he was knocked out of the Democratic Primary elections for State Senate by Jessica Ramos.
